Velez leads Tijuana to 9-3 win versus former team on Sunday

Sunday Jan 03, 2010
Revolucion Tijuana (1-3) scored six unanswered goals in the third quarter of their 9-3 win versus the California Cougars on Sunday night at Furati Arena in Tijuana. The Cougars (4-3 PASL-Pro, 5-4 Overall) led 2-1 at the end of the first half before their meltdown. The win was Tijuana’s first of the 2009-10 season. They are a provisional team in the Professional Arena Soccer League this season.

Enrique Tovar and Jorge Martinez both scored goals in the first quarter to give California a 2-0 lead. Eduardo Velez scored in the final two minutes of the second quarter to bring Tijuana within one at 2-1.

California led 2-1 through the first half, but saw Tijuana score six unanswered goals in the third.

The Cougars, playing on tired legs after Saturday's overtime loss to San Diego, came out extremely flat in the second half. They failed to stop the six goal rally from Tijuana, and fell behind 7-2 entering the fourth quarter.

The Cougars managed a sixth attacker goal in the fourth. They put Nelson Santana in as the sixth attacker after Tijuana goalkeeper Pedro Parra was ejected with a red card. Parra got in an altercation with Brian Farber, and bloodied Farber’s nose.

Farber remained in the game despite being punched in the face.

The match was plagued by several hard fouls. Many of the would be hard fouls were left without penalty, and were committed by Tijuana.

Disagreements between the Cougars and the officials regarding fouls and basic rule interpretation was a constant theme throughout the match.
