NATIONAL NIGHT OUT WITH THE COUGARS
Stockton, CA Stockton Cougars forward and head coach Bernie Lilavois, as well as Stockton Pumas defender Josh Copeland and United States National Arena Soccer team member Garth Archibald, represented the Cougars and the city of Stockton at National Night Out on August 5.
National Night Out is an even designed to heighten crime and drug-prevention awareness. It is also designed to strengthen neighborhood spirit and community relations between local police and the people they protect. It sends a message that neighborhoods are working together and are fighting back against crime.
It was the 25th anniversary of the national event. Neighborhoods across the country participated with local block parties, parades, contests, youth activities and cookouts. The Cougars participated in a local block party in Stockton.
Both Lilavois and Archibald played this summer with the United States National Arena Soccer Team in July.
The U.S. team lost to both the Mexican and Canadian national teams during the one day tournament. Mexico defeated the United States squad 6-4 in the first game. The match was tied at 4-4 with just four minutes remaining. It was a back and forth contest, but the US blinked late and an illegal substitution cost them the match.
The match with Canada started with the U.S. team behind at 5-2. However, the Americans battled back and eventually rallied to take a 7-6 lead. Canada’s Darko Kolic fueled the Canadian win with six of the team’s final six goals. The U.S. team eventually fell to Canada by a final of 10-9.
“I felt we represented well at the tournament taking on two very experienced teams with the young and energetic roster we brought,” said Lilavois of his USNAST experience. “Both games were very competitive and we had the lead at one point in both matches which is a positive we can build on. The future looks extremely bright as these young players gained invaluable experience and will be that much better next time.”
The Cougars are in the fourth year of existence and their first as member of the new Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL-Pro).
The PASL-Pro is a newly formed professional arena soccer league. Its inaugural regular begins on October 25 at Stockton Arena. A Championship Weekend taking place in Stockton, CA will be held on March 13-15, 2009.
