COUGARS LEAD WAY FOR U.S. NATIONAL TEAM

Friday Aug 15, 2008
Montreal, Canada - Evan McNeley led the United States National Arena Soccer Team with four goals during the Circuito Mundial 2008 championship in early July. Brian Farber matched McNeley in points as he added four assists during the three team tournament. The event, sanctioned by Federacion Internacional de Futbol Rapido (FIFRA), featured teams from the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The team was hand picked and led by head coach Bernie Lilavois. He chose four other players from last season’s Cougars team and one player from the Stockton Pumas.

“I felt we represented well at the tournament taking on two very experienced teams with the young and energetic roster we brought,” said Lilavois. “Both games were very competitive and we had the lead at one point in both matches which is a positive we can build on. The future looks extremely bright as these young players gained invaluable experience and will be that much better next time.”

The U.S. team lost to both the Mexican and Canadian national teams during the one day tournament. Mexico defeated the United States squad 6-4 in the first game. The match was tied at 4-4 with just four minutes remaining. It was a back and forth contest, but the US blinked late and an illegal substitution cost them the match.

The match with Canada started with the U.S. team behind at 5-2. However, the Americans battled back and eventually rallied to take a 7-6 lead. Canada’s Darko Kolic fueled the Canadian win with six of the team’s final six goals. The U.S. team eventually fell to Canada by a final of 10-9.

“It was a great feeling to represent the United States and wear the team USA jersey,” added Lilavois about the experience.

“We will continue to build our pool of players around the country in the coming weeks and months ahead,” said Lilavois about his upcoming season with the Cougars. “I see us definitely adding some veterans to the mix.”
