Cougars acquire Santos from Sharks in midseason trade

Friday Jan 18, 2008
Stockton, CA – Jan. 18, 2008 – The California Cougars, of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL), acquire midfielder Marcelo Santos from the Orlando Sharks for future considerations.

Santos scored nine points in 11 games for the Sharks in their inaugural season. One of his three goals came during the Sharks, 20-11, loss to the Cougars on November 21. He will make his debut as a Cougar against his former team tonight in Orlando.

Santos spent his rookie season with Milwaukee in 2006-07. He played in 19 games for the Wave and finished the season with two goals and three assists for seven points. The Brazilian born midfielder had two assists against the Cougars on January 7, 2007 in a Wave 18-6 win over California. Santos also tallied six blocks in his debut season.

Santos attended college at Holy Names University in Oakland, CA. He led the Hawks to a Cal Pac Championship, an NAIA Region II Championship and a NAIA National Tournament appearance. Santos was named to the All-Cal Pac, All-Region and NAIA All-American teams in 2005.

“He’s a very experienced player,” said Cougars head coach Bernie Lilavois. “He’s a good fit for our offense and will make an immediate impact on power play restarts. He’s already adapted himself to our team; the chemistry between him and the boys is great.”

The Cougars play the Sharks for the second time this season tonight in Orlando. The Sharks travel to California next weekend to play the Cougars again on January 27 at 6:15PM. That game will be televised locally on SJTV and can be heard on both 1420AM KSTN and www.californiacougars.net.
