Turlock tryouts attract international attention

Stockton, CA -- Sept. 17, 2007 – Thirty-five soccer hopefuls attend the California Cougars open tryout session on Saturday September 15, 2007 at Turlock Indoor Soccer.

The tryouts attracted international attention as eight year professional Daniel Williams of Sheffield, England flew in to the United States for the event. Williams grew up in Sheffield and left school at 16 to begin his professional career. He has played for Chesterfield FC when it was part of England’s first division. Williams most recently played for Stevenage located in London, and Rushden & Diamonds located outside of London. “It would be superb if the Cougars bring me in. I’m looking to move over to California and it would be a great start for me,” said Williams.

The tryouts featured many local players like former California State University at Stanislaus soccer player Hugo Brambilla. The 22 year old Brambilla played for the CSUS Warriors for five years. Brambilla was part of the Premier Arena Soccer League (PASL) champion Stockton Pumas. The Pumas are the official development team of the Cougars.

Turlock Indoor Soccer owner Art Pulido watched the event from the sidelines. He has his own PASL team that plays against the Stockton Pumas. He became involved in indoor soccer 10 years ago and is excited about its recent growth. “The PASL is just getting bigger and better. With the Cougars getting involved and (them) being the only team on the west coast makes it (the PASL) more prestigious. Guys know they need to play in the PASL to get an honest look at in the indoor game,” said Pulido.

A local car salesman Javier Perez tried out for the team. Perez played at Tokay High School in Lodi from 1994 to 1998. The 28 year old remembers playing against Dominic Jakubek during his high school days, and was inspired by Dom to tryout. “I’ve got five children at home, I’m married, but hey if there’s an opportunity here to play then I’ll take it,” said Perez.

The next tryout session is scheduled for Saturday September 22, 2007 at Estadio Azteca in Sacramento. The final tryout is set to take place in Sonoma on September 23, at University Sports Complex in Rohnert Park.

The Cougars open training camp on September 24, 2007 at the Stockton Arena.

The Stars of Mexico visit the Stockton Arena on September 29, 2007 in the Cougars first exhibition match.
