Cougars announce contract agreements with Caution, Scheer and Velez

Wednesday Sep 05, 2007
Stockton, CA -- Sept. 5, 2007 -- The California Cougars, of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL), announced Wednesday that the team has agreed to contract terms with Defender Matt Caution, as well as Midfielders Craig Scheer and Eduardo Velez for the upcoming 2007-2008 season.

The 2006-2007 season was the third for Matt Caution with the California Cougars. His 29 blocks in 18 games played last season matched his MISL career high and placed him third best on the Cougars roster.

Cougars Head Coach Bernie Lilavois said that, “Caution is a veteran that I will look to for leadership on and off the field. He’s been plagued by injuries and we need him to stay injury free not only for all 30 regular season games but also into the playoffs.”

Craig Scheer is also in his third year with the Cougars. He finished the 2006-2007 with 22 points, including eight goals and six assists, in 20 games played. Scheer’s 18 career blocks with the Cougars places him seventh on the all time Cougars’ list. He is also eighth in points scored with 32, sixth in games played at 48 and seventh in assists with 11 on the Cougars all time lists.

Lilavois said that, “Scheer is a steady player that plays multiple positions for us. Last season was an injury plagued season and because of that his season was full of ups and downs. He’s another veteran that I will need to provide leadership on and off the field.”

Midfielder Eduardo Velez enters his second season with the team. He finished the 2006-2007 season racking up 36 fouls and seven blocks. His defensive play made him one of the most aggressive and physical players in the league. Velez was also a major contributor to the Premier Arena Soccer League (PASL) champions, and California Cougars developmental team, the Stockton Pumas.

Lilavois said that, “Velez is a young player that showed extremely well in the off season. He played with our development team, the Stockton Pumas, and was outstanding. If the summer was any kind of indication of what will happen down the road; then he will be a very good MISL player.”

Caution, Scheer and Velez now join previously signed players: Chris Handsor, Gordon Chin and Sanaldo.

Forward Chris Handsor was acquired through the 2007-2008 MISL Expansion Draft from the Chicago Storm.

Midfielder Gordon Chin was acquired through the 2007-2008 MISL Expansion Draft from the Baltimore Blast.

The Cougars traded for Goalkeeper Sanaldo, from the Detroit Ignition, before the 2007-2008 MISL Expansion Draft.
