Cougars Sign Goalkeeper Elfvin

Tuesday Feb 06, 2007
(STOCKTON, CALIF., FEBRUARY 6, 2007) – The Cougars announced today that veteran indoor goalkeeper Bayard Elfvin has agreed to terms with the club. Bayard was the Cougars second selection, fourth overall, in the 2006 MISL dispersal draft. Per club policy terms of the deal were not disclosed.

‘I’m looking forward to making an impact right away,” said Elfvin. “The team is set to make a run at a playoff spot and I wanted to come in and help the club get there.”

Elfvin, a native of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, played last season for the St. Louis Steamers and spent this past summer playing for the United Soccer League’s Portland Timbers. Elfvin appeared in nine games for the Steamers’ last season.

“We’re excited to have an experienced indoor player of Elfvin’s caliber,” Cougars coach Bernie Lilavois said. “He brings an added level of playing ability that can help us get that playoff spot.”

Elfvin rejoins several familiar faces on the Cougars roster in Aaron Susi, Ryan Hall and Antonio Sutton. All four were teammates with the Cleveland Force in 2004-05 before the team folded.

Elfvin, a graduate of Ashland University, was a four-year letter winner and a two-time All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) selection for the Eagles. Bayard ended his career the leader in Ashland history in shutouts (14) and goals-against-average (1.23). He had a career record of 31-12-2 and led the Eagles to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Midwest Regional Championship and to the National Quarterfinals during his junior season. In his final season at Ashland, Elfvin posted a record of 7-1-2 and allowed just eight goals, the fewest in school history. He also notched four shutouts while recording a goals-against-average of 0.86 and 40 saves.
