Monday Feb 05, 2007
Come watch the California Cougars take on the legends of the pitch as they take on the Stars of Mexico on Saturday, February 10 at 7:00 p.m. at the Stockton Arena.
Some of the biggest names to take the pitch, midfielder Missael Espinoza, forward Luis (“El Matador’) Hernandez and Benjamín ("El Maestro") Galindo are set to lead a full compliment of Hispanic all-star players against the Cougars.
“We feel that this game will not only highlight the entire Cougars organization, but put a spotlight on the city of Stockton as a hotbed for soccer involvement,” said Cougars owner Jim Rachels.
Missael Espinoza, a member of Mexican national team’s 1994 FIFA World Cup squad, has played for Chivas de Guadalajara and San Jose Clash of the MLS.
Luis Hernandez, also a former member of the Mexican national team, played on a 1998 FIFA World Cup that advanced to the second before falling 2-1 to Germany. Another MLS star, Hernandez played for the Los Angeles Galaxy in 1999 and 2000.
Benjamín Galindo, a teammate of Espinoza’s on the 1994 FIFA World Cup squad, was the head coach of Chivas de Guadalajara until 2005.
“The players we are bringing to the Stockton Arena are some of the world’s most famous and most talented athletes this sport has ever seen,” said Rachels.
The game highlights a host of events in the Stockton area including the Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) All-Star game and an all day soccer tournament featuring local amateur teams.
Times for the events include an 8:00 am start time for the daylong amateur tournament, followed by the PASL All-Star game at 5:00. The Stars of Mexico versus the California Cougars will begin approximately at 7:00 pm.
