Cougars Resign Veterans Caution, Sheer

The California Cougars today announced that the team has agreed to terms with veteran Cougars Matt Caution and Craig Scheer.

The Cougars acquired defender Caution from the St. Louis Steamers during the 2005 expansion draft as the 12th overall player selected. Caution posted 13 blocks with a goal and one assist in 17 games for the Cougars before suffering a season ending injury.

Caution, a veteran of the indoor and outdoor game, was drafted by the Major League Soccer (MLS) Dallas Burn in 1997. He later joined National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) and played three seasons, one each with the St. Louis Ambush, the Buffalo Blizzard, and the Cleveland Crunch. A high school standout from St. Louis, Caution played his college soccer at Southwest Missouri State University.

“I am really excited to be back. We ended the last season on such a positive note and I look forward to see where we will go from there,” said Caution. “I love it here in Stockton and am ready to get back to work.”

Scheer was acquired by the Cougars in the 2005 MISL dispersal draft from the Kansas City Comets. Last season, Scheer racked up five goals and five assists while posting ten blocks in 28 games for the Cougars as a midfielder. ,p> An MISL veteran, Scheer played for the Baltimore Blast before being traded to the Comets, and was a member of the Blast’s 2002-2003 MSL Championship club. In college, Scheer played soccer at the University of Illinois-Springfield and Lewis and Clark Community College. He was a two-time National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics All-American.
