Cougars Resign Rookie of the Year Figueroa
 Friday Sep 08, 2006
(STOCKTON, CALIF., SEPTEMBER 6, 2006) – The California Cougars today announced that the team has agreed to terms with forward Vicente Figueroa. Figueroa earned MISL Rookie of the Year honors last season and led the Cougars in goals, finishing sixth in the MISL in goals scored (26) and totaled 30 points overall in the Cougars inaugural season.
“We’re very excited to have Vicente back with the Cougars,” said head coach Troy Dayak. “His rookie season speaks for itself. Figueroa was an integral part of the inaugural team in Stockton, and he’s going to be a key component of our 2006-07 team. His outdoor skills translate extremely well indoors and he plays a very tough game.”
Prior to joining the Cougars, the San Jose, California native known as “El Tigre” played in the PASL with Off the Wall Santa Clara from 2003-2005 and represented the West in the PASL All-Star Game in 2003. Figueroa appeared in 26 Major Indoor Soccer League games during his rookie season. He has also had success in the outdoor game, playing in 8 games with the 2000 MLS Cup Champions Kansas City Wizards, recording 1 goal and 1 assist for 3 points. In 1999, Figueroa started 14 of the 22 games played with the Kansas City Wizards.
The Cougars also resigned defender Antonio Sutton for the upcoming season. Sutton played in 27 games for the Cougars in the 2005-06 campaign scoring 4 goals and posting 28 blocks.
A veteran of the indoor game, the Cougars acquired Sutton in the 2005 MISL expansion draft from the Cleveland Force. Sutton played five seasons indoors with the Sacramento Knights of the former WISL.
